From analysis to action, we're leading the energy transition

Stablecoins settled $27.6 trillion in 2024, surpassing Visa and Mastercard's combined transaction volume for the first time (CEX.IO, Stablecoin Landscape Report, 2025). That number carries caveats: roughly 70% was bot-driven, and the comparison conflates settlement with payment authorization. But the directional signal is unambiguous. Financial infrastructure is being rewritten on programmable rails, and the institutions that built the old rails are joining the rewrite rather than fighting it. The markets most exposed to this shift aren't retail payments. They're the fragmented commodity markets, from energy to carbon, where settlement still runs on spreadsheets, checks, and month-long cycles.

During the 2025 fall semester, Innovo Markets partnered with a Senior Design team from the Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Through this collaboration, and through the Senior Design program, we set out to address a pressing product challenge in the renewable energy market: transforming fragmented Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) data into clear, auditable, and compliance-ready reporting.

The collaboration brought together current UIUC students, Illinois alumni, and Innovo’s team to design a new reporting feature from the ground up, one intended to be built directly into Innovo’s platform and used by real customers as part of the next generation of the Innovo product.

The project originated through Manav Shah, who had interned at Innovo during the summer leading into the semester. As he prepared to return to campus, he helped make the connection between the company he had worked for and the class he was about to take, aligning a real product need at Innovo with the capstone experience.

Danny Koch, a mechanical engineering graduate of The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois and former Senior Design student himself, now found himself supporting the experience from the opposite side. Together, Manav and Danny helped bridge Innovo and the Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering to bring the project to life.

At Innovo, customers made it clear that REC reporting was still heavily manual and resource-intensive. Compliance and voluntary frameworks vary widely by state and standard, registry data is scattered across systems like M-RETS and PJM-GATS, and assembling audit-ready documentation often demands substantial internal effort. Reporting has consistently been one of the most significant pain points shared by our clients, and Innovo saw this as a critical market gap.

Innovo attended Abu Dhabi Finance Week (ADFW), where a consistent message emerged across global banks, asset managers, and policymakers. The constraint in global finance is no longer capital or intent, it’s infrastructure. Over the next 18–24 months, institutions will focus on instant settlement, data integrity, and operational efficiency, and climate finance will only scale on commercially viable, institutional-grade rails.

Renewables are expanding at record pace in 2025, but electricity demand is rising even faster. Data centers, electrification, and industrial growth are reshaping load curves in ways the grid was never built to handle. The next decade belongs to companies that track electricity consumption with precision, procure clean power thoughtfully, and build credible Scope 2 reporting systems. Innovo is building the infrastructure that makes this possible.

The GHG Protocol is moving Scope 2 accounting toward real-time, grid-specific, and far more defensible reporting. Large energy users will shift to hourly and deliverable clean energy claims. Smaller companies will get exemptions and a long runway. If your decarbonization strategy relies on annual REC matching and broad regional boundaries, it is time to retool.

Public consultation runs from October 20 to December 19, 2025. Final publication is expected in 2027 with phased implementation. Innovo gives organizations structured data, granular tracking capabilities, and simplified compliance workflows, which together support a more resilient and future-proof Scope 2 strategy.

At Trellis Impact 25 in San Jose, hosted by Trellis Group and the Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA), Innovo joined leaders across government, technology, and corporate sustainability to unpack how regulation, finance, and data are reshaping the renewable energy landscape.

Throughout the event, it was clear that organizations equipped with granular data, transparent processes, and strong financial acumen will successfully navigate both new market opportunities and heightened stakeholder scrutiny. The overarching takeaway: precision, transparency, and financial fluency have become mission-critical for organizations leading the next decade of climate action. The takeaway: precision, transparency, and financial fluency will define the next decade of climate action.
